How to Prompt

Prompts should be one prompt per comment, formatted in this way: fandom, character(s), prompt word/sentence

Example: Star Wars, Obi-Wan Kenobi, I don't like sand

Prompts may also be open ended, unspecific, or anthropomorphic, such as:

any, any, I don't like sand
or
Earth geography, sand, I don't like humans very much, either

Prompts for relationships are welcome; a / is used for romantic/sexual relationships and an & for platonic. A prompt that uses both means the relationship can be written as either romantic or platonic, such as:

Star Wars, Anakin/&Obi-Wan, I don't like sand

Prompts may be repeated if they are unfilled; there is no obligation to read through every prompt to make sure yours isn't a repeat. This year's 3SF will stay open for new prompts through Sunday, February 12th.

How to Fill

Respond to your chosen prompt with a short fic of three sentences containing the fandom & characters requested!

Prompts can be filled more than once, as many times as someone has a new idea for them.

No, fills do not need to be exactly three sentences! It's more of a guideline. Please abuse grammar and punctuation as much as desired.

3SF is a Choose Not to Warn space. Spoiler and content warnings are not required, though writers are free to add them if they please. If you see something you don't like, just scroll until you do!

Aravis stood in the Tisroc’s throne room, ignoring the whispers that swirled thicker than a desert sandstorm—comments on her Northern dress, stiffer and darker than the vibrant silks of the court; her proud, noble bearing; her face that seemed so familiar; and her appearance on behalf of a barbarian country.

She lifted her chin and allowed her gaze to slowly sweep the room, looking pointedly at those who spoke behind their hands, until her gaze fell upon Ahoshta Tarkaan, seated in the Grand Vizier’s chair, below and to the right of the Tisroc’s throne, and she smiled in triumph as his eyes widened in recognition and he sputtered; keeping her gaze on him, she walked several paces forward, to the spot where the Tarkaan before her had slunk away in disgrace at having his request denied.

Bowing low before the Tisroc’s throne, she said, “I speak on behalf of King Lune of Archenland: Archenland is interested in expanding its trading routes and willing to forgive past grievances between Archenland and Calormen in the interest of establishing a trade route between Anvard and Tashbaan, conveying wood from Archenland’s forests and spices from Tashbaan's markets, if it pleases the Tisroc, may he live forever.”

“Have you not been branded enough of a fool, Rabadash? Surely you do not wish to heap more mockery upon yourself by pursuing such a foolish endeavor,” Aravis said, her lips curled in silent laughter as the prince prostrated even more deeply before her.

In a muffled voice, for his lips touched the carpet, he began, “O Tisroc, may you live forever, you greatly flatter me with your concern—”

“You are wrong, Rabadash,” Aravis interrupted, “I laugh at you, as does all of Tashbaan—indeed, all of Calormen, and so do Narnia and Telmar and all the wide lands beyond and over the sea, and they will continue to long after your bones have turned to dust in your grave, Rabadash the Ridiculous, laughingstock of the Calormene empire.”

There is always a more difficult parent, Ram supposes. Father is indisputably the easiest—always predisposed to consideration, to thoughtful conversation, to offering a guiding hand. Mother, on the other hand…

Ram struggles, sometimes.

“It is not good to be so quick to anger,” Father tells him soothingly, finding him sullen and sulking after yet another disagreement. “Try to understand your mother; she does not want you roaming too far when you are this young. There will be time for that later.”

“But I am nearly twelve! And I am Prince!” Ram complains—and he does not understand until a long time later the somber look in his father’s eyes.

It takes him many more years to fully understand his mother, too: why she fears the thought of young men marching off away from family to fight, why she balks at giving him too much power while he is still too young, why she mistrusts the older lords and is not afraid to openly question them, why she clutches him so closely to her and struggles to let go.

“Do not be ashamed of being a child, my son,” she murmurs against his hair that night, when he finally takes his father’s advice and lets her put him to bed with a story and a kiss. “It is a privilege afforded to too few, and you will be a greater man because of it.”

The first time Jyn assumes he must find her of strategic importance, the second because of guilt, and the third she's too busy thinking he must be a miracle - but then it happens again and again.

"You keep looking at me like that," Cassian says, once they're out of danger, "something special about my face?"

"Not at all," she murmurs, not bothering to hide how marvellously bewildering it feels that he comes back for her every time, and she kisses him with gratitude.

“My mother might know some magic to regrow it,” he offers, crouching beside Sif, just out of her reach; it’s a reckless promise - when has he ever had occasion to ask Frigga a thing about hair growth? - but he’s just young enough to still have faith in his mother’s ability to do miracles, still bruised enough by Sif’s blows to be wary of her, and, worst of all, moved enough by her current pathetic state, curled against the wall with her head buried on drawn-up knees that were likely soaked with tears, considering the muffled sounds coming from her, to want to do fix what he’d done (a decidedly unfamiliar feeling).

He’s not sure what he expects - a bitter haven’t you done enough, maybe, or a sharp punch to the nose, both of which would be deserved, but it’s certainly not Sif lifting a tear-stained face to him and offering up a knife, hilt-first.

“Just get rid of the rest of it,” she says, and though he hesitates, her eyes flash a challenge at him until he takes it; until he winds his long fingers through the length of her hair, cropping it short and even lock by lock, daring a glimpse at the nape of her neck as it reveals itself to him, a pale expanse released from the shadow of her hair, prickling with gooseflesh as he lays his palm across it, across the silence stretched between them.

It would have worked, perhaps, on another Queen: someone younger, less experienced, who had not gone through the end of the world, who had not lost everything -- someone with more to lose.

And so, Ramonda lifts her chin at the man before her -- a creature in whose eyes she sees the turmoil of an ancient rage -- and does not falter for a second. Names are just a mask, she knows; a disguise others can inherit. But that rage... she knows it as intimately as breathing.

She purses her lips against the chill air, against the ripples in the water, against the wave of memories and other names that threaten to shake her to the bone. "Choose your name wisely, then, when speaking to me," she replies, speaking directly into the turmoil within him. "For I'm sure I could call you all manner of things."

The stars had sprung into the sky above the gardens of the Houses of Healing by the time Faramir and Merry’s conversation fell into a lull, and Merry peered up at the Man who walked beside him, whose gaze was distant as he mused over what Merry had shared.

Faramir was shrewder than his brother had been, that much was obvious—all throughout their conversation, Merry had felt as if Faramir had gleaned more meaning from his words than he had intended to give them—but it was equally clear that the Man’s perception was tempered by kindness, kindness toward Merry and toward Éowyn, to whom his questions always turned, and with a smile to himself, Merry guessed Faramir’s purpose.

“I wish you luck, sir,” Merry said, “for the Lady Éowyn is a woman of great heart and valor, but it’s been long since she has felt hope or joy, I think, and I hope that you might bring her some.”

And at his side, Faramir smiled and said, “I wish that, too.”
