How to Prompt

Prompts should be one prompt per comment, formatted in this way: fandom, character(s), prompt word/sentence

Example: Star Wars, Obi-Wan Kenobi, I don't like sand

Prompts may also be open ended, unspecific, or anthropomorphic, such as:

or
Earth geography, sand, I don't like humans very much, either

Prompts for relationships are welcome; a / is used for romantic/sexual relationships and an & for platonic. A prompt that uses both means the relationship can be written as either romantic or platonic, such as:

Prompts may be repeated if they are unfilled; there is no obligation to read through every prompt to make sure yours isn't a repeat. This year's 3SF will stay open for new prompts through Sunday, February 12th.

Narnia, Eustace, the past never truly goes away

Sometimes, even in England, Eustace catches the sun glinting off his arm or his leg, reflecting off the plated surface of a scale that had been torn away, warning him when he feels his heart stray towards greed. Sometimes, he feels fire lick up his throat and his arms swell with a strength alien to this body he now wears, and he longs for the strength he once had—strength that could make his schoolmates cower in fear.

Jill notices, he is certain, but she doesn’t say a word; they have a silent pact, of sorts, to not mention these things, for some things need not be spoken to be understood.

"We're basically best friends by this point, right, so why have we never made out?" Lup asks halfway through the twenty-second year as she and Lucretia chill side by side on the deck of a cruise ship -- she and Barry and Taako are about 98% certain the Light of Creation crashed somewhere in the incredibly scenic tropical archipelago and coral reef system that this particular cruise is designed to showcase (nearly as gorgeous as Lucretia, tbqh) and it turns out that buying tickets with legit cash and playing tourist is a lot easier than wrangling permission to bring a spaceship into a restricted environmental protection zone, who knew? -- and then hastily sits up from her artistic slouch to pound Lucretia between the shoulder blades when the human begins to choke on a mouthful of her piña colada equivalent.

"Hey, hey, Lucretia, breathe with me -- in two three; hold two three; out two three; hold two three..." and Lup keeps that count, rock steady, until Lucretia's face is less ashy and she's gathered enough composure to blot her streaming eyes with a tiny bar napkin; and she keeps her arm slung around Lucretia's waist until her crewmate shrugs her off and straightens to set the remains of her drink aside.

"Wow, I do not have good timing with jokes some days," Lup says when the silence has just started to tip over the line from comfortable to awkward (fuckdammit), "but c'mon, stick your feet in my lap and I'll give you a complementary massage to make up for almost winning you this year's most ridiculous death competition by accident."

Hao Jia knew going out would earn her at best a slap from Yin Song, but she couldn’t stop herself. The alternative was to wither away in the darkness of her cold chambers that only seemed to grow even more bitingly frigid these days with Yin Song’s presence, where the only thing to occupy Hao Jia’s mind was regrets - regrets of how stupid she had been, to think herself so intelligent, walking into Yin Song’s arms, thinking that he would be her salvation when in reality, such saviour never existed in him and only in the figments of her imaginations.

She knew better now, and this was why she risked even her life to escape this place, to run into the arms of her sisters, because they were her only salvation now, a reminder of who she used to be, a confirmation that she hadn’t lost herself to her own foolishness, an affirmation that her heart that felt still and dead in Yin Song’s presence still beat in her chest, full of life; that Hao Jia existed, she was here, she mattered and, most importantly of all, she was loved.

She copies his mouth sounds instead, John and hell, and he laughs until water leaks from his eyes; she touches it, lifts her awkward fingers to her lips, and tastes enough of the ocean in his salt that she cannot hate him more than she loves him still – but whatever small babbling collection of syllables he decides to give her, it won’t be a gift she keeps.

In the soft light of their now shared bedroom, her uncle took her hand and said, "I have something for you." Rhaenyra looked at him, and her heart skipped a beat. He had always been the one to give her the most wonderful gifts, whenever he came back, he always had something for her. As she grew she always thought that it was his fault that she loved everything shiny, and had a tendency to think gifts meant love.

"What is it, husband?" she asked, and loved how his eyes gleamed at the honorific. He didn't answer, instead took her hand, and started walking.

(If they could get through the rest of their lives, without him ever have to hear her call him Daemon, that would be all he could ask for. He never wanted her to have a reason to do that, he thought as he led his beautiful wife over to the travelling chest).

She followed him, breathing shallowly, not wanting him to notice how excited she was. When had he found the time to get her a gift? They had after all spent every waking moment together since Driftmark. He stopped in front of a large travelling chest, and gestured for her to open it.

Rhaenyra kneeled down and opened it slowly. Inside was hundreds of different things. Black pearl necklace, ruby rings, emerald earrings. It was full of gifts, and she looked back at her husband with wonder, "My love, what is this?"

He grinned, before squatting down beside her, carressing her face. "It's all the gifts I couldn't give you for the last ten years."

(If anyone had asked Baela and Rhaena about the chest, they would tell them that it was their father's secret treasure. They had watched him all their lives putting things in there that they never saw again. In the beginning they thought it was gifts for their mother, put aside for a later time, but they never, ever saw them again.)

Rhaenyra looked at Daemon, for once speechless. Her head was spinning. It wasn't the gifts in themselves, (even though she loved them!), but the implication that Daemon had been thinking of her all these years they've been apart. He hadn't locked her away in a faraway part of his heart, like she had done to him. He had collected things that reminded him of her, and here they were. A tiny fortune of thoughts, a tiny heap of his love for her.

"Yes," Yonekuni said, startling Shiro, though he relaxed immediately, thoughtlessly, into the stroke of Yonekuni's hand over his back, "mine; stay the hell away from my wolf, mother."

Millisecond away from her whip, just enough of a dash and movement to make sure it misses (he doesn't let himself think of the times he wants it to hit, not here), a spin around and his bloodstone in her.

She never smiles at him in here, not really, but that's part of the deal isn't it (she smiles at him other places and other times, touches his face with hands more gentle than anyone would ever expect and than he would ever tell anyone) and he brings the spear back to his hand, tenses for the next moment.

The whip lashes through his chest, not enough time to evade it, and there's a moment of almost triumph in her eyes even as she yanks him closer (she knows it's not a good idea but how good is her judgment really when it comes to him) and he trades blow for blow, watches her slide into the river in anger, knows next time he comes home it will be something new and catches the spear again, lets himself breathe and remember that the journey home will bring him back to her.

But now-- "Anya Forger!"-- as he watches Anya, almost an adult herself now, cross the stage at her graduation ceremony, Imperial Scholar stole draped proudly over her shoulders while Yor cries next to him, he thinks that maybe he can finally take a deep breath and relax, maybe even retire from the business.

Any, Any, lightning storm in space

At one point on the long trip back from the front of the Courageous, Aspen started to see little twinkling lights at the edges of the suit's helmet's field of view, then turns to look, and gasps. There's a beautiful storm of dust and flashes passing through the void of space, and by some chance and some miracle, there's a witness to the sight. It's a wonder to behold, the emptiness of the space that extends far above the ship's shell, but even greater are the little things that fill it.

This ship holds thousands, but it's tiny in comparison to the vastness of everything surrounding it; that is, absolute nothing. Perhaps everyone who joined the slumbering crew is mad to have done so, to be trying to defy the void itself. Perhaps they're all simply human.
