He remembers falling, his body twisting in the air, unable to make his wings beat, to fly up and up, instead nothing but down and down and down into the water, his rider locked in death with him, and both of them twisted up with the others, the killers, the ones his rider said they must end.

They have ended them, but they have ended, too, but he does not remember the impact; he only knows that he is awake, and his rider is here, whispering to him, his hands on his neck, and it is wrong, wrong, he has not been in the pit for long enough for his rider to grow and to have eggs of his own that grew into riders.

“We are leaving, Caraxes,” his rider is whispering to him, and does not seem to know that it is wrong, that they are ended, and he wonders if maybe, maybe, maybe he can save his rider from ending, instead of failing again.

aaaahhhh, nooooooo Caraxes *crying*

Oh noooooo. I am not going to be able to handle it when the show gets to this point, I love my sweet squeaky longboy too much. I hope he somehow succeeds in fixing everything the second time around.

It was awful, this slipping through time business, made his feathers stand on end and gave him vertigo even though he'd been an expert dive-bomber since he was three months old, and of course the time vortex had dropped on him right before he'd dipped his beak into that juicy roadkill deer, which was no longer dead and hadn't even been born yet. He was hungry, and there weren't any telephone poles or high-rises to land on or any electric lights to navigate by, and the menacingly large local unkindness spoke in an archaic variant that was only used for ceremonial cawings, and was, in fact, unkind.

He was getting back home, he vowed grimly, and after that, nevermore.

UNKIND INDEED. And of course, that last line xD

Aww, I feel so bad for the poor thing! There's so many great clever bits in this - and tbh before I remembered what an unkindness was in this context, I was imagining some kind of eldritch time god and I didn't even blink. Fantastic.

Neko waits and waits, but Hibiki does not return, not when the cloud disappears and the sun rises and sets and rises again, not when other humans return to the village and come to the shrine, and not even in the cycle of days later when many generations of children have passed and the original green humans have gone away and the stone human has gone still.

One day, when her moderately reliable assistant humans are discussing how to restore the stone image of her that has worn away, Neko grows weary, so she tucks herself away in a corner of the shrine and falls sleep; when she wakes up, the sun is high and the great sakura trees of the shrine are smaller, the buildings newer -- and there is a shrine maiden sweeping the grass where Neko's stone image used to be.

Neko runs toward her with a kitten's boundless energy, crying out in joy, "Hibiki!"

I am not far along enough in genshin impact to know who these are, but this sounds interesting!

Wednesday, Wednesday Addams/Bianca Barclay, rivals to lovers

any, any, OT3 - soldier, poet, king

They argue about it for some time, trying to determine which of the roles is best suited for each of them as Elliot's hands dance through the tumblers and firewalls, Hardison anticipates and blocks each cut and thrust of his opponent, and Parker keeps them all on track, sometimes not saying more than a fragment or two of a sentence to remind them of the plan and where they are in it.

Ultimately, they conclude there's no way they can separate the roles, the same way they've concluded there's no way to separate themselves. Hardison boasts he knew all along, which sets Elliot off into a new argument, such that neither of them notice Parker smiling at having found the people she wants to spend a lot more time with.

I love this!!

Jack nicknames him "the bard" because he recites poetry, softly, every night; at first he speaks the lines to himself, but in time he understands that they do not mind the sound, are soothed by it even.

The bard is younger than either of them but has seen far more war than Jack and David put together; he is not broken, exactly, but he is brittle enough that Jack and David do their best to stop their fights, their old resentments, and to focus on maintaining as much peace as they can in their exile. He is good for them (they always do better when there is something to protect together instead of having to agree on what they want).

When he finally asks to join them in bed, he asks if he can write on them, dark words in ink across their bodies; on David, he writes a romantic ditty over his chest, on Jack a melancholy poem of longing that winds around his torso from his shoulderblade to below his navel. He reads the poems aloud to them, lips honey-slow as he draws out the sounds, then suggests that they blur the written words with hands and mouths.

They were worried at first, that the bard would be one more thing they fought over, one more tract of embattled territory in their long history of love, rivalry, and hate. But the young poet made it clear: they would not compete for him -- he would conquer them both.

She tries to tease him, accuse him of fickleness, but Marguerite can see his eyes have stopped wandering, he's fixed his sights on her alone.

"I still have plenty of deadly secrets," she tells him, Roxton is too honourable to forgive everything, she's certain of it, it will deter him sooner or later.

"And so you do, I'll survive them," he says, and his sincerity catches her off guard long enough for him to kiss her, "we'll survive them."

This is so sweet, how John refuses to let Marguerite push him away. Lovely!

"Naru?" Sasuke barely mumbled it into his lover's neck, but he wasn't surprised when he got a murmured response immediately, Naruto's fingers trailing up the nape of his neck. "I. . . How- Why- How did you never," he paused, swallowing hard, fingertips tracing down the defined muscle of Naruto's arm and . . . over the place where the skin changed, "give up on me?"

"Sasuke," Naruto made a fierce little sound and Sasuke tensed, but Naruto only held him tight, gentle, and nuzzled his face, "it's. . . It was - and is - you," he paused, with a little laugh, and Sasuke shifted enough to look him in the eye; he was smiling, eyes bright as a summer sky, "and it's me. Of course I never could have given up on you," he grinned, "and I never will."

Naruto reassuring Sasuke is wonderfully sweet!

Back in the day, Harry Stone could be positively insufferable on the night shift: always quick off the mark with his groan-worthy puns; lightning-fast with his blasted magic tricks; and his penchant for practical jokes meant that former Assistant DA Dan Fielding couldn’t open any can of nuts for decades after leaving the courthouse, for fear of spring-loaded snakes jumping out to scare him shitless.

But one thing Dan never doubted about Judge Harold T. Stone, over all the years they worked together, was his deep, abiding faith: in his friends, in his colleagues, and in the constant stream of humanity that paused every night to stand in front of his bench for his verdict on their transgressions. Even though Dan didn’t always understand why, Harry held that same faith in everyone no matter who they were.

Thirty years later, Harry’s daughter, Manhattan night court judge Abby T. Stone, knocks on Dan’s front door. When she presents her case for bringing him back to the courtroom as its public defender, he protests and evades and keeps her at bay; afraid after love and loss and too long on his own. “I’d have thought you’d want to do that or have a more experienced captain in the left seat,” Cheng Xiao said in surprise.

“I’ll be running the sims from the observer seat, and I thought they’d be a little more relaxed and motivated with you in the captain’s seat, having an example to emulate and all.”

“Well this is certainly a change from Captain ‘Let’s throw two engine failures and an incapacitated captain at the new female pilot’ I had to deal with,” Cheng Xiao observed dryly.

Gu Nanting smiled. “Who said I’m still not going to throw two engine failures at them?”

There was a weight to it as he got dressed, heavier than the armor itself, but he felt lighter than he had in over a decade.

The Lin Shu of his distant past could dress this way, all martial cuts and youthful invincibility, but the Mei Changsu of his more recent years couldn't dream of it, wrapped up in the warm layers of an ill man.

To dress for war now felt like clothing himself in his past self and stripping himself bare all at once. He knew better now than to think himself invincible--he'd been dying for nearly half of his life--but he didn't need to be invincible this time. He only needed what he'd needed since he first came into Lin Chen's care: to live long enough to accomplish what he'd set out to do.

This is lovely, the contrast of the young warrior and the old man, invincibility and wisdom as he goes to meet his fate.

Thank you! He's actually only in his early 30s here, but he's been living on borrowed time (and with a new identity) since he was fatally poisoned in his late teens.

Any, any, if you’re gonna jump it’ll be with the game (Big League, Tom Cochrane and Red Rider)

The plans are clinical, careful, given in meetings they always make sure nobody is followed to, and she mostly listens at first, knows that she's the least trusted, and then one day she interrupts and says, "Somebody's going to have to be there. Physically inside, and they won't be getting out."

There are eyes on her, and it would be uncomfortable if she hadn't had to spend the last few years learning how not to care when his eyes were on her, learning how to be unfeeling and nothing, learning how to be someone he didn't even want to care for anymore, and she raises a languid hand into the air, not asking a question, not being anything more than what she's already been reduced to.

"That was me volunteering. I have training to resist interrogation - I was trained by them."

I love how it works on so many levels--after everything that's happened between the characters, she's still willing to sacrifice herself. This is amazing, thank you for writing it!

"I had told you, Prince," says Achilles, seemingly unaffected by the eye-watering fumes, "that they were not to be trusted."
Zagreus, who for all his divinity, is nonetheless corporeal and thus subject to physical assault, blinks away tears.
"I understand, sir," he says, blearingly looking over at the Head Chef, who seems delighted to be chopping up something other than fish for once, "I won't bring them back again."

Of course the Head Chef would be delighted to chop up the onions! Really nice!

i genuinely laughed out loud at this one, so good and so much in vibe with the humor of the game and just, delightful

"It's not working!" Osaka wailed, years streaming from her eyes as she continued to dice the onions.

"Uh, Miss Ayamu," Chiyo ventured, "why are you chopping all the onions in the kitchen?"

"I thought I could build up an immunity if I just kept cutting the onions," Osaka said, "but every new onion only makes it worse!"

Any, any, that ship has sailed.

In the beginning, even though they were only twelve, she had ideas that it would be her and Logan - from the way he looked at her the first time they met, with that infectious smile but eyes that told her there was more to him that there seemed - but Lily had other plans, and Duncan had shown more of an interest in Veronica, so the moment passed.

In high school and college, there had been more than one attempt to make it work - from the unexpected kiss on the Camelot balcony, to the time he saved her life on the roof of the Grand, to fights over her work and his drinking and more - but perhaps they were both too damaged then, so the moment passed.

In the end, when they were reunited in Neptune, she had sworn it would never happen, and yet it was impossible to resist - when he was cleared of suspicion in Bonnie's murder, when she was free of her old relationship - and this time, at least she knows in her heart that, no matter how far the ship takes him away, he'll be coming home to her soon, because this is their time.

Well done! Nostalgic and bittersweet.

When the sacred becomes mundane, when you reduce the sacred to the facts and battle strategies and secret contacts and Johanna Constantine's little quips -- you don't need faith. What you need is a drink and the belief that you're doing this for the greater good. You take on cutesy nicknames like Ric the Vic because God works in mysterious ways, and one of the most effective ways is to drag the evil to the light and watch it burn, with a little help from the local ghostbuster (even if Johanna hates it when you call her that).

Yesss I love Ric the Vic!

I hope we see more of her in the next season!

Make a friendly joke of it when someone assumes you're stupid; pretend to be confused when someone talks shit about your life mattering, says your sexuality is a choice, thinks your gender makes you fodder for catcalls and comments; watch the powerful from afar as they destroy bodies and hopes and dreams and lives, and never, ever act like you can see them for what they are.

The anger used to slip out of her, unvarnished, a hacksaw with teeth in search of righteous justice; now, she encodes it, her personal cryptography of rage; she wraps it tight in a Trojan horse, where it remains, undetected, until the moment she decides to release havoc.
