House of the Dragon, Rhaenyra/Daemon, all they keep asking me/is if i’m gonna be your bride/the only kind of girl they see/is a one night or a wife

There is no shame in the way of the dragons — they are the most powerful family in Westeros, and their way reigns strong over any of the Faith's tenets.

It is a foregone conclusion, and so it is all Rhaenyra hears growing up: Daemon will destroy you, Daemon will consume you, Daemon will eat you alive. It is said to her in candied, oblique comments when Daemon leaves the room and whispered behind their backs when they walk together, but Rhaenyra pays no mind to any of it; a star is no real choice beside the fire of a dragon.

LOL I love all this Daemon slander. He deserves every bit of it. And of course Rhaenyra doesn't actually care at all ("candied comments" is so great) and prefers him to any faith. Why wouldn't she??

Yeah, why WOULD she prefer any of those other lords with whom a relationship *wouldn't* be incest? What halfway sane person would *want* that??? *Snickers* I love them, though sometimes I feel a leeettle bad that Rhaenyra inherits all of Daemon's bullshit by association.

Not a Targaryen, that's for sure! I'd feel bad for her, but all that bullshit is like, a good 30% of the reason she wants him in the first place, so.

Star Wars, Anakin Skywalker, i was the last king/i was ablaze in the sun

There is no gap between his death and his continued life, no possible spacetime in which he isn't. He is the Force and the Force is as intrinsic to the Universe as gravity is. When the Death Star explodes and his mortal body dies, he feels its cells violently split apart into their component atoms, feels the molecules of the station violently split apart into their component atoms, feels atoms collide against atoms in a massive release of energy that ripples through the subatomic to his elemental soul.

Oh, Anakin. The idea that he's ripping himself apart even more as he's doing all these heinous things or witnessing them happening is just so much. Like, buddy, you deserve all that pain, and at the same time, my poor poor baby.

Narnia, Susan, give me back my girlhood/it was mine first

It is hard being older than all of her peers. They are not immature, she does not enjoy the company of those who are truly immature, but her friends are still girls, and they laugh easily and worry about girlish things that Susan can no longer bring herself to be concerned with. It's isolating, and she wishes sometimes that she could be a girl again herself; it would be so much easier.

Poor Susan, it would be easier, of course! No wonder she would have turned to the 'adult' things that were left to her in this world.

Ohh, this is lovely character study.

It’s a strange thing to be pulled in and out of timelines, never knowing what age one is supposed to be or what role one is expected to play—radiant queen or dutiful daughter; it’s a far stranger, harder thing to lose all of one’s family before the age of twenty-one.

It’s an even harder thing to stand alone beside the five graves that contain all that is left of one’s parents and siblings, with only an aunt and uncle left to provide hollow comfort.

It’s less hard to leave childhood behind without a second glance because it has become something too agonizing to think of, but Susan does; and the parts that she keeps—the parts that she claims as hers and that no one can take from her—she buries deeply, where they cannot surface to scratch at her wounds.

This is great, the way it plays with the timelines and their differing ages, how her childhood goes from being something too confusing to too painful to look at once she's on her own. It's heartbreaking that the parts she considers truly her are the same parts she buries. Poor Susan.

oh this is beautiful and tragic!

It was already painful the first time - perhaps it is that she never expected it to happen again, chose to believe that was the whole story and the end, that it is so much harder the second time.

"Go back to your home," she is told, and hears "go back to being a child" but she hasn't been a child since she landed in Narnia the first time, and how is that fair at all, how is she supposed to go back to being something she hasn't been in an uncountable number of years?

Well, she's always been good at out playing other people's games.

OH SUSAN.

That she ends up seeing it all as someone else's game is perfect - of course it is, bad kitty - but also because that's what she accuses the others of, playing games. OUCH.

Winternight, Vasya/Morozko, don’t you ever tame your demons/but always keep them on a leash

“Have I not told you to never give me orders?” Vasya said, rolling them over so that she sat astride him, the tips of her hair brushing against his chest; she trailed her forefinger over the strong planes of his face, enjoying how his eyes lidded at the mere touch of her fingertip, enjoying the control she had over him, the frost-demon she had broken like a young foal with her stubbornness, who suffered her demands and bent to her will.

“Perhaps,” he murmured as her finger brushed over his lips, tracing the curve of his mouth, “but I think I require a reminder of why I shouldn’t,” he said with a smile, his cool gaze drifting over her form in fond appreciation, as she shifted to straddle his hips, her legs tight around him.

Leaning forward, her hot skin pressed against his cool chest, she whispered, “Because it is I who gives the orders, Karachun,” and she pinned his shoulders with her hands and took him into the heat of her.

Yesssss. Very much not tamed, but also very very leashed, by his own choice!! I love the contrasts of heat and cold, the ways she just melts him down every time. I love seeing Vasya getting to have all the fun she deserves.

I just love Morozko conceding to her because he can't deny her anything. And yes, Vasya deserves all the fun!

any, any, "There's a flood warning till 3:45 and we're still going to school?"

"There's a flood warning on," Mark, the first-year student, said to Professor Munroe, "so why are we still attending classes?"

Storm waited for the student to finish, to tell the rest of the joke, to indicate any awareness of the fact that Xavier's School for Gifted Children contained persons who could manipulate natural phenomena and that he was asking the question of someone who had been considered a weather goddess at some point in her life.

"Yes," she said bluntly, when none of that awareness materialized on Mark's face.

Hikaku extracts the scroll from his weapons pouch, handing it to Madara-sama.

"Hikaku?" The head of his clan unrolls it, eyes widening, before snapping it shut abruptly. "Where do you get this?"

"I found it on the ground," face impassive, Hikaku recites the words that his lover was so insistent that he say. "I found it on the ground."

I laughed! :D

"Why are you giving me this information?" Adora asked Scorpia.

"Oh, honey," she replied, "when you two are together, you'll know why, but for now, let's say this particular bit of Hordak's plans fell off the back of a glider, okay?" Blowing Adora a kiss, Scorpia remounted her glider and made a big show of "accidentally" knocking a container off the back of it to be sure Adora got the hint and could bring proof of the information to Glimmer and the other princesses.

If Jason hadn’t been riding sleep deprivation from a too long stakeout with his most annoying brother - Nightwing, of course - he wouldn’t have responded to Tim’s request to see his gun with a shrug and handed over his primary weapon.

The sound of the gunshot started sense into him and he turned to find Tim looking at the just fired weapon with contemplation, ignoring the now shattered Batcomputer beside him, for the bullet had hit a stalactite, bounced off the giant penny and landed straight into multimillion dollar equipment.

Jason pales and immediately began reviewing what favours he could cash in to Oracle so she’d remove the video tape evidence and backed away, muttering under his breath as he left, “this isn’t my fault, you found it on the ground…”

any, any, sigil

In the half-dark hours before the sunrise, by the sea, they sit together and read each other--they read every meaning and every sigil in these paths of red and black and blue, etched deep with magic. Together, so close, so sharp, so careful, as if they had a small, tender secret within. And, perhaps, they do.

"What are you doing?" Stiles asked, peering over his mother's worktable, and she smiled at him and brushed a hand over his hair, then lifted him up to see - a deep red band lay across the surface, and her needle and brilliant red thread picking out a pattern upon it.

"I am thinking of how difficult it is to keep you safe, my little mischief, Mieczysław," his mother said, and he ducked his head, but giggled as he saw his mother's smile, "and how I shall do so always, no matter what."

"Teach me about it?" Stiles asked, and his mother gave him another warm smile and showed him the way to distill the patterns from words, rich and complex, strokes curving and slashing and arching together to frame a boundary for the world.

Stiles paused in his hurried rummaging through the cluttered drawer, his fingers brushing something quite familiar and yet-

He pulled out a deep red band - as bright now as it had been the day it had been sewn, he thought, throat tight, and the stitching as brilliant, not quite fading into the fabric - and his heart squeezed in his chest, memory rushing back over him; he laced it around his wrist - it would no longer fit around his throat as it had once - and clasped it there, as secure as ever and pulsing with familiar warmth.

. . .the memory of strokes that, worked and wound with love, could bend and bind reality rushed in his mind, mingling with thoughts of a figure forever interposing himself between dangers and those they would harm; bleeding and holding steady, no matter what - Stiles' fingers itched for a pen and a needle, feeling a flash of sympathy for his mother, his mind already shaping a new and very particular sigil for a very important wolf.

any, any, symbols

Minato fingers the seal on the kunai, a seal that everyone recognises on sight even if no one knows how to use it.

But, as someone who has worked with seals for a long time, Minato knows that they are not static things. No, a seal is a map, designed to direct chakra in particular ways to achieve particular ends, and maps are nothing but symbols, a representation of ways of thought.

This seal did what is was supposed to, for a particular man at at particular time and Minato closes his hand around the hilt.

He knows his own mind, his own chakra, his own ends.

Now he needs to make his own map.

This is fascinating! I love the thoughts on the seal here, and Minato's confidence and his determination.

Magic is everywhere now, and Mr Segundus finds it in the cracks in the teacups, in missing buttons, in the colour of cats' eyes and ravens' feathers, in the cobblestones and the carriages, in the bittersweet evening fog and the tricks played by the wind, surrounded by small hints of light, perfectly round and bright, faint and then sharp again.

He sees its symbols in the full face of the moon, in a wisp of smoke in the distance, in rough but surprisingly kind hands that feel like a little storm, like shared spiced wine and conversations that last all through the night.

Magic, he thinks, is recognition and mirrors, unknown new languages, anchors and lifelines that replace old dreams with something better: something beautiful, found under the crossroads and the sharp light of the sky; it is the answer, the compass and the destination--the call that throws every door and every window wide, wide open.

"Some kind of welcome we get, isn't it?" Yattaran observed as the half-dozen patrol ships approached them, shouldering his favourite axe. "Everywhere we go, battlestations and klaxons. . ."

"Truly unfathomable," Kei laughed, brushing her fingers over his belt buckle - tracing the skull and crossbones there, "I wonder whyever that could be." She turned away with a flick of her hair, moving to slip into her heavy-suit as Yattaran watched appreciatively - and idly categorised the number of their ship's favourite emblem on both of them.

any, any, all we left behind

"My brother, always such a terrible strategist," Loki says, his tone of voice annoyed, and his mouth scowling; yet there is something wistful and lost in his eyes.

Sylvie firmly shuts down that idea, turning away from the variant and his reminiscing, checking over her weapons (again). His melancholy is his own business, and she will not dwell on it, nor allow herself to even think of chasing one's brother through never-ending mazes, and laughing in the golden sunlight of mother's gardens.

"Sarah?" Toby says, perched in a high window, and Sarah lifts her head from the intricate chess game she has been supervising Jareth's favourite board play against itself. "Do you ever . . . ever regret it? The stuff - the world - we left behind, I mean." he clarifies, turning towards her.

Another world whirls through Sarah's memories and she holds perfectly still for a moment, as though part of her might spill out and be lost if she so much as breathed.

"No." she says simply, and hopes it is the truth, "I never even think of it." she says, and the truth is so malleable here that she smiles as she meets his eyes and he, every inch the princeling, returns it as he slouches lazily against the stone, a flick of his fingers conjuring silver butterflies that dive to harass the chess pieces and make Sarah laugh.

The ambiguity of which world she regrets is excellent (I kept going back and forth on which it was, and in the end, it doesn't really matter, does it? Either world left behind is a regret). (all of that aside, given the chess pieces and the butterflies, I'm assuming the Labyrinth)

Star Wars, Obi-Wan Kenobi, remembrance

When he moves into the small hut in the Wastes, Obi-Wan digs the wooden box up once more. Hidden in the middle of the desert, he finds it with the Force, following the embers of a bond that feels like a ghost trapped in his chest without escape.

Anakin's lightsaber hasn't changed in the decade it's been hidden away in the sand, but Obi-Wan has; he greets the ghost with resigned, pained affection and takes the box home with him to wait for the inevitable.

The Jedi dealt with grief in their own way; there was no death, of course, but there was loss, and learning to let go of that grief was a Jedi’s duty.

Obi-Wan knew that he’d never been good at it—he still mourned Qui-Gon, all these years later, and thinking of a friend that he had lost on the battlefield or in the massacre at the Temple could still stop him in his tracks.

But what really shamed him was his deepest grief of all, the one he could not even pretend at letting go of—the truth was, he thought of Anakin all the time, obsessed over every conversation they’d had, over every half-truth and missed opportunity, and he was still kept awake at night in his sand hut, wondering what he could have done differently, wondering why.

I love this exploration on how Obi-Wan processes grief - it's so heartbreaking and so true to character.

He really does break my heart (in the best way). Thank you!

Star Wars, Obi-Wan Kenobi, "This is not my first war"

The Republic, dead; his friends hacked in pieces; when some strange instinct leads him to Mustafar, Obi-Wan is more than ready to carry out Yoda's orders.

Then he sees it - barely dry tear trails on Vader's face amidst the inhuman grin, the foul stench of ash and the Dark side, the aftermath of the massacre; it's the tiniest crak, but it's there and that's all that matters.

It might be kinder to kill Anakin, Obi-Wan muses; but that's not who he is and he isn’t feeling merciful, either; he doesn't know what he'll do after, but he will make Anakin face what he has done; he will drag him to the Light kicking and screaming, because this is not Obi-Wan's first war and he isnot losing this fight, no matter what it takes.

Oh wow, I love this. An Obi-Wan who choses to save Anakin not out of mercy but because he just won't give up.

I think it's thanks to a combination of factors. It helps that Obi-Wan can actually focus on Anakin instead of "heavily pregnant civilian in mortal danger", so he can see the tiny spark of Anakin buried deep inside Vader. Him not being willing to kill Anakin is also very Jedi; he's not killing an enemy unless he has to, which, in canon, is a part of why he leaves Anakin/Vader to burn, but here, it means he's determined to bring him back or die trying. There is also a part of Obi-Wan that still loves Anakin, and killing him would devastate him despite the circumstances; but if he's not killing Vader, then bringing him back to the Light is pretty much his only available option and Obi-Wan recognizes that.

Fantastic - I like Obi-Wan seeing the battle for Anakin's soul as another war he's determined to fight.

Star Wars, any, the many things that make up a rebellion

any, any, we'll start a revolution

The teachers kept us inside two whole days, and they read stories and assigned chores and did everything to avoid talking about it, but we all knew the Shinra robots were out there attacking everything that moved and the mercs were fighting and getting hurt trying to keep them away from the houses. When we were finally allowed out again, a lot of the grownups' stuff was dented or knocked down, but our hideout was just wrecked.

That's why Shinra sucks, and why every time one of those guys in suits comes down here, he's not allowed to go back up before we steal his wallet.

It’s been days since they returned and Jill still wakes sometimes thinking they’re on the trek to the North, past Narnia and into the land of Giants, but then the nasty voices of girls who can only be English school girls rise and remind her she’s separated from Eustace and her weapons she managed to sneak back.

Eustace nods grimly whenever she tells him and reveals he’s done the same but they need to get the weapons further away or one of the boys snooping around them to uncover their secrets really will find out.

Jill doesn’t tell him she’s already made up a plan for that eventuality - moving the weaponry, not their discovery - but she’s hesitant reveal it because a schoolyard revolution might be a tad too unconventional for Eustace.

Minglan sits across from Lin Qinshuang at the farmhouse, watching her once-proud figure in the low light, now laying collapsed across the luohan couch. For so long, Lin-xiaoniang has been a towering presence in her life, one that cast long shadows over everything she did, from her lessons with Molan to her mother’s death in childhood.

Minglan unrolls the scroll Molan gave her when she moved into her new courtyard, to rub it in her face that her mother is dead and Molan’s a favored concubine. Look, she almost says, but holds herself back, Look at the seeds that you have sown. Look at how they have grown.

I love this ❤️ and it’s great to see a Minglan fill 🥰🥰🥰🥰

Mito's fingers curled too-tight around her brush, but she finished her strokes with elegant precision as always, and set it aside it with easy grace.

"You know what is expected of you," her father said from the doorway, and Mito smiled, precise and empty as the sky over the sea outside; hiding poison and vicious edges just as the sea beneath, "Mito-chan. You will do your duty. The Senju will be here on the morrow."

"I have always known," Mito said, letting the fury at Mito-chan, as though she were still a girl; as though she had been allowed to be a girl for years, slide beneath the surface with her poison and blades, "and I have always done so.

The Lost World, Marguerite Krux/John Roxton, her knight in shining armour

Anne of Green Gables, Anne Shirley, briar and woodbine

It was something Anne had been pleased to discover delight in, those moments when she and Gilbert were twined round each other so tightly that nothing could come between them, their skin slick and flushed with pleasure. As though they were briar and woodbine, grown far too quickly and lost forever to separation. The rush of joy eclipses her thoughts until there's no thought for anything but the pulse of life between them.

Any, any, for we must be sailing to know where we are, we are ships on the sea, and must keep moving on

Wine glass in hand Harlock looked out towards the stars, and the soft, almost sorrowful music of Miime's harp filling the air of his quarters. A typical scene in The Arcadia's downtime.

In this vast and endless sea of stars, there was something that was somehow much harder to grasp the scale of... That everlasting mourning that continued to carry on inside Harlock's heart. This sadness within wasn't a secret to his crew.

But despite all that he carried inside of him, Harlock kept moving on. There was still a fire inside him. This sea of stars was forever his home, and a sailor could never afford to idly sit on by.

Despite it all, he would sail onwards.

His dear friend wouldn't want that, and with that firey spirit from his friend that now blazed within Harlock's own heart— neither did he.

This was never your kind of life, was it?

Yama's lips quirked, and he ran a hand over the tops of the bobbing flowers as the ship groaned and clicked around him. "Perhaps not," he said, and rubbed a petal between his thumb and fingers, then moved away, looking out into the passing stars - he didn't know where they were, or where they would be, but the Arcadia sailed onwards always, and there was a comfort in that knowledge, "but it seems it is now."

The Old Kingdom, Elinor/Terciel, unexpected by welcome encounters on the road

any, any, a swan maiden (is not a delicate beauty)

There are plenty of swan maidens in Narnia and frankly it's a little confusing to Peter--he's more than once made a fool of himself trying to figure out if he's talking to a Dumb swan who is on the large side, Talking swans who might be on the small size, or swan maidens could tend to look identical to Dumb swans. Their human forms are a little more recognizable as they are, on the whole, tend to be pale colored, tall, and beautiful; they also all tend to keep their feathered cloaks on their person at all times, either as actual cloaks or sashes.

What makes them different is if they try to look willowy and delicate--Lucy's two guards look like waifish handmaidens right up until someone tried to hurt his sister, in which case they descended on the attacker with inhuman strength until Lucy would step in to stop them from literally tearing the attacker to shreds--or if they do not.

And, on the other hand, you would get swan maidens like Lady Etain; Peter's new general to the northern armies was taller than most minotaurs he'd met and more muscled too. She looked very pleased when he blurted out as much and said "Some of my fellow swans might try pretty and weak, but they have the same strength as I. I'm one of the ones that are just not going to hide it."

Peter nodded, mainly on the account that he was too busy staring at one of her biceps that was bigger than his own head and coming to the uncomfortable realization that he preferred this brawnier beauty instead.

*laughs* Excellent! (and oh dear, the pitfalls of swan identification >.>)

(Identification is difficult in the first place, but imagine the damage an outraged swan could do if it could hold a knife! That's a faux pas you wouldn't want to commit twice.)

ooohh yes I love this! I love your description of the swan maidens, how they keep feathers on their bodies and how ferocious and strong they are, even if they don't always look like it. Lucy's two swan maiden guards is a great mental image, and LOL for Peter's realization

"She's the one," he says fondly, holding an ice pack against his forehead as he watches the most notorious swan living near town attack yet another foolish person near "her" lake.

His sister winces when the swan chomps on the trespasser's hand, but recalls with admiration how her future sister-in-law could knock the biggest, strongest man in town flat in a single punch in her human form.

Completely delightful, and her brother is set since swans mate for life.

So she started lifting weights, and taking kickboxing, and discovered - if not a talent, precisely, at least an interest; two years later she was scouted, and moved to Midgar. SOLDIER training was grueling, but when she finally made Third Class and General Sephiroth himself said the way she cleaved her sword through that dragon's neck was as graceful as a swan's wing, SOLDIER Marie-Rose Cygne counted it all worth it.
