How to Prompt

Prompts should be one prompt per comment, formatted in this way: fandom, character(s), prompt word/sentence

Example: Star Wars, Obi-Wan Kenobi, I don't like sand

Prompts may also be open ended, unspecific, or anthropomorphic, such as:

any, any, I don't like sand
or
Earth geography, sand, I don't like humans very much, either

Prompts for relationships are welcome; a / is used for romantic/sexual relationships and an & for platonic. A prompt that uses both means the relationship can be written as either romantic or platonic, such as:

Star Wars, Anakin/&Obi-Wan, I don't like sand

Prompts may be repeated if they are unfilled; there is no obligation to read through every prompt to make sure yours isn't a repeat. This year's 3SF will stay open for new prompts through Sunday, February 12th.

How to Fill

Respond to your chosen prompt with a short fic of three sentences containing the fandom & characters requested!

Prompts can be filled more than once, as many times as someone has a new idea for them.

Notes & Rules

No, fills do not need to be exactly three sentences! It's more of a guideline. Please abuse grammar and punctuation as much as desired.

3SF is a Choose Not to Warn space. Spoiler and content warnings are not required, though writers are free to add them if they please. If you see something you don't like, just scroll until you do!

A Dreamwidth account is not needed to participate. Anonymous prompts/fills are welcome, or you can use Open ID.

Hollow Knight, Little Knight and Vessel - Set Me Free

Two fragments of void given shape and purpose, both of them made for the same purpose, and now...

The Vessel, shuddering, cracking and oozing, kneels, laying down its nail.

They say the void feels nothing, thinks nothing, but as a flicker of light grows to a spectral blade in its little sibling's hand, something like trust passes between them.

Ooooh. I don't know the canon, but this is so lovely and intriguing!

For a bit of context: Essentially, the Vessel was created to hold a being of pure light in check (and inside itself), and it's finally cracking under the strain of it. Its little sibling was created for the same purpose but rejected. Depending on the ending, it either takes the Vessel's place, or decides to kill the fucking sun to end this once and for all.

In canon, the Vessel never lays down its weapon to let you do this, but I thought the idea was... interesting.

Bat Family (Batman), Tim, hey brother, do you still believe in one anotheR

He has no more plans, exhausted from travelling around the world, from taking control of a mad man’s empire to take down an enemy who harmed himself as well, from coordinating people he once trusted with his life but now that trust is frayed and fragile. Tim looks Ra’s in the eye as the latter kicks him out the window, knowing he’s won the battle but he might not come out the other side as he falls down, down, down.

When Dick asks, later in the cave, Tim smiles sadly and murmurs, “Of course you’d catch me, you’re my brother,” and wonders if he can believe it now.

Ohhhh, I can feel the exhaustion in this one. <3 And oh, the last line, especially the "wonders if he can believe it now". ;_;

Yeah I imagine by this point in the Red Robin comics, Tim really really needs a vacation.

Also, I love seeing how much trauma I can get out of poor Tim. 😇😈😇

damn i need to actually read the full red robin comics at some point, i read the first ones and enjoyed them and then fell off but it seems like it only got worse and i mean, that's my JAM

and clearly yours too, because this made me deeply sad for him and oh dick, always saving his million adopted siblings, and they have so many problems forever

Persona 2, Suou bros

Katsuya watches Tatsuya, standing apart from the rest of them and flicking his lighter impatiently. This is not his younger brother- or, at least, not the younger brother he half-raised, not the younger brother who's been pulling away and getting mixed up in all sorts of trouble.

Tatsuya catches his eye and quickly looks away. "You must think this is all pretty absurd. Another world, another me... Even if it's true."

Katsuya frowns. He's not wrong, but that doesn't mean he doesn't believe his brother. Even if this isn't the Tatsuya he knows...

"What was your Katsuya like?" he says instead.

Tatsuya flicks his lighter, looking away. "...a pain, if I'm being honest."

Katsuya scoffs. "That sounds about right. You think I'm a pain over here, too." He goes to stand by his brother, following his gaze over the city that stretches out below. "Well, until your business is finished here... I'll keep being a pain. It's my job, as your brother and a police officer. And I'll trust in you to keep us all safe from whatever the hell Nyarlathotep has planned."

Tatsuya looks up at him, naked surprise in his eyes for just a moment before he looks away again, trying to throw up those tough guy walls. "...just don't feed me any cake."

I really enjoyed this, the angst and the wistfulness and the awkwardness of being around another version of someone you love, and the decision to trust. <3 Thank you -- it was an absolute delight to roll in those feelings even without knowing the canon. :D

Thank you so much! I'm glad it could hit the right emotional notes even though you're not familiar with the canon. Tatsuya and Katsuya's complicated relationship is so tasty, so it was fun to take a crack at writing it!

Silmarillion, Fingolfin & Fëanor

Fingolfin watched as Fëanor pressed through the host, his sons at his flank, crying to the gathered Noldor to array themselves for the march, inspiring them with words of fervor and stoking the fire of their hearts to a blaze, even as the fire in Fëanor’s eyes burned brighter than the flames of the torches he and his sons held aloft.

Fingolfin stood with his hand clasped around the pommel of his sword, standing like a rock in the midst of crashing waves as the Noldor surged around him, arming themselves and crying to their neighbors, and he followed with his gaze his brother’s movement through the host, clenching the pommel of his sword at the memory of their bitter words and Fëanor's wrath.

And as Fëanor turned to issue another rallying cry, his eyes found Fingolfin’s through the crowd, and he stilled and fell silent, and they gazed at each other across the gathered Noldor, until at last Fingolfin inclined his head and turned to his people.

Oh wow! I love the metaphors -- Fëanor's fire, Fingolfin and the ocean rock -- and the final image, the two of them looking at each other and how much is conveyed through that gaze, the moment of almost-accord before they resume the war.

It feels very "scene from an epic". :)

There's so much 'if only' about them and the whole thing! It's such a tragedy. I love the fire vs stone metaphor (would Finarfin be water or air, I wonder?)

I'm rereading The Silmarillion right now, and the tragedy of Fingolfin and Fëanor's relationship and the further tragedy that befalls Fingolfin for choosing to make amends, forgive Fëanor, and pledge to follow him again and again is so interesting to me, especially because Fingolfin's mind is largely hidden from readers, so we never know exactly why he chooses to do so (which I tried to preserve here).

Hmm...I think Finarfin could be either, really, but I'm leaning toward water because he always tries to smooth things over and calm tempers—he's the water (that tries to) to dampen Fëanor's flame and the current flowing around Fingolfin's stony stubbornness.

Yeah you're right, water does suit him best - not least because of his affinity for the Teleri too!

Fingolfin would have been such a good brother to Feanor if he hadn't been such a dick, yes. Supportive, talented, loyal, fierce - what more could you ask for in a sibling??

Peace and Practicality (Naruto; Hashirama & Tobirama)

"You used to at least talk with me about it. . ." Hashirama sank low on the other side of the irori. "Tobi. . . Otouto, have you really lost faith so? I used to be able to trust you, and now I wonder if you really even want. . ."

Tobirama closed his eyes for a moment, breathing deeply - it wasn't as calming as it could have been; the three clan members they had lost to the Uchiha in the last week rose behind his eyes as soon as he closed them - and looked across the gulf of understanding that they had lost long ago at his brother, ever so convinced of his own way forwards to peace, no matter what was lost or how their people despaired, looking to them for surety.

Oh nooooo. This hurts, with the rift between them (and how understandable it seems?), and ouch at the way Hashirama catches himself with Tobi. . . Otouto. ;_;

Thank you ;; yes it does, and the rift between them has happened so naturally and they both have good reasons, perhaps, but . . . the understanding lacking between them and lack of common ground they can meet on any more. . . *sighs*

The Umbrella Academy, Marcus & Sparrow!Ben

They were close, once, way back before Ben decided the best way to Number One was to shut all the rest of them out, before he got his shot and spent it and became resentful, waiting for Marcus to fail too. Before the missions, before the fame, before they knew any of the things that matter. It hits Marcus like a gut-punch, sometimes, in the middle of missions, when they get each other's back and Ben grins and for a second forgets to put anything sharp and smug in it, and when the sharpness and the taunts come back all he can think is, you were my best friend once.

Ooooh. I really enjoyed the character work here, and ouch at the last line. (I can never get enough of the way relationships fall apart and also the moments of forgetting-that-the-relationship-has-fallen-apart, so this was fun to read!)
