Joy's mother has viciously disapproved of everything Joy has ever done or ever been. Even now that her mom has turned over a new leaf -- smiling at nothing, holding hands with Dad when she thinks no one's looking, her weird new friendship with that IRS woman -- her mother still can't help herself from criticizing Joy.

But the worst expression of shock, fear and horror Joy's ever seen her mother wear was when Joy interrupted her mother's tirade about Joy's weight to say, "I think I could use an everything bagel right now."
