Oxventure: Blades in the Dark, Zillah/Kasimir

The light show's clearly magical in nature somehow, and Edvard, Lilith, and Eleanor have been just about bouncing off the walls for the last two days trying to figure out the cause. Kasimir's been hanging around half because it's an entertaining show watching the scholars wind themselves up over not knowing, and half in case they end up needing someone to do something more active than staring at a book, but nobody's asked him for more than a cup of tea, and when Zillah stands in the doorway and beckons him with a gesture, there's no reason not to go to her.

The stairs to the roof are murder on his leg, but Zillah helps support him, and Kasimir has to admit the view of the sky's a lot better up here than through the windows. The whiskey Zillah pulls from her bag and passes over doesn't hurt, either, or the way she leans against him as he settles, a warm line pressed up against his side.

"What do you make of the big question?" he asks, gesturing at the sky with the bottle before he passes it back over, and he feels her shrug rather than sees it.

"I'll leave the whys to the rest of them. But it doesn't seem to be doing any damage, and I mean, just look at it. Isn't it something?" Her voice is soft, and Kasimir glances over and feel struck dumb by the gentle smile on her face.

"I think maybe you're the smartest of us all, Zil," he says, startled into honesty by the sweetness of her, and when she squawks out a startled laugh, he leans over to kiss the disbelief out of her mouth.
