This post will remain open for new prompts until we hit 4000 comments, at which point we'll open a new one to avoid captcha as long as possible. New fills and comments on fills will always be welcome.


How to Prompt

Prompts should be one prompt per comment, formatted in this way: fandom, character(s), prompt word/sentence

Example: Star Wars, Obi-Wan Kenobi, I don't like sand

Prompts may also be open ended, unspecific, or anthropomorphic, such as:

any, any, I don't like sand
or
Earth geography, sand, I don't like humans very much, either

Prompts for relationships are welcome; a / is used for romantic/sexual relationships and an & for platonic. A prompt that uses both means the relationship can be written as either romantic or platonic, such as:

Star Wars, Anakin/&Obi-Wan, I don't like sand

Prompts may be repeated if they are unfilled; there is no obligation to read through every prompt to make sure yours isn't a repeat. This year's 3SF will stay open for new prompts through Sunday, February 12th.

How to Fill

Respond to your chosen prompt with a short fic of three sentences containing the fandom & characters requested!

Prompts can be filled more than once, as many times as someone has a new idea for them.

Notes & Rules

No, fills do not need to be exactly three sentences! It's more of a guideline. Please abuse grammar and punctuation as much as desired.

3SF is a Choose Not to Warn space. Spoiler and content warnings are not required, though writers are free to add them if they please. If you see something you don't like, just scroll until you do!

A Dreamwidth account is not needed to participate. Anonymous prompts/fills are welcome, or you can use Open ID.

Cross-posting is encouraged; there is a 3SF Collection on AO3 if you'd like to post fills there as well.

Her mother steps back from her preparations, looks around the room, and nods. Yes, it's all done--the food is ready, the drinks poured, the band tuned up, and the decorations finished. The guests will arrive in minutes, so when Morticia turns to Wednesday, the teen already knows what her mother wants, but waits for her to speak anyway.

"Wednesday, summon your father's (many times over) great uncle, will you? It's just about time."

With a nod, Wednesday clears her throat and speaks "Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice."

(Somewhere down a hall, her father and uncle shout "Uncle!" and there's a loud ruckus as the three men reunite once more.)

"We’re too old now," Rory pouts as she rests her head heavily against his shoulder. New Year’s Eve had once been a grand town festival, but even she couldn’t muster the energy to rise from the comfort of the couch cushions and join Stars Hollow in their hours-long celebrations.

Jess wraps his arm around her and slouches further into the couch. The sun’s barely set, but even his eyes are starting to feel heavier. "Speak for yourself," he says, purposefully slowly as though he’s tired, "and your frown lines. Getting a little old there, Gilmore."

She scoffs. "Those frown lines are described as 'worldly', Mariano."

"Old."

"Worldly!"

"Fascinating," I said, shuffling through the Tarot cards one final time before returning the deck to the Ystharian ambassador's niece, a young woman of indeterminate ancestry with scandalously short hair and an ingenious set of spectacles that Hope assured me could not possibly be made from glass. "The symbolism is rich despite the repetitive nature of the suits, and the Major Arcana add additional layers of possibility -- what games do you play with them?"

"Hardly any these days," Miss Soledad Aguilar said as she tucked the cards into the canvas satchel slung over her shoulder. "We use a simplified version of the minor arcana for thousands of games, but the full deck is mostly used for divination, which means many people think playing games with the Major Arcana is disrespectful or dangerous -- though most card-based divination is of dubious strength or accuracy."

I thought of the many layers of Poacher, the ways that prosaic gameplay and the more arcane aspects intertwined to build upon each other until the great masters could nearly read a man's soul from his discards, and slipped my own deck from my pocket. "I think we took the opposite road on Alinor," I said as I fanned out the deck, displaying various Fish and Happenstance cards to Miss Aguilar's evident interest, "to the point where some people will deny Poacher has any power beyond that of parting fools from their money, but I assure you from personal experience that the cards can speak messages from the gods themselves."

"Fascinating," Miss Aguilar echoed, pausing for my nod before she slipped a pair of cards (the Salmon of Wisdom and Friend with Errand) from my hands to examine. "Mr. Greenwing, I believe there's an empty table under the pergola. Would you mind teaching me the basic rules of Poacher in return for instruction in some simple Tarot spreads? With, perhaps, the Lady Violet to help both of us demonstrate -- I know one of my uncle's predecessors taught her some Tarot, which is why I brought my deck in the first place -- and I assume she knows at least the rudiments of Poacher."

"Miss Aguilar, it would be my pleasure," I returned, and clicked my heels and offered her my most elaborate bow before I began pushing through the crowded afternoon fete in search of Violet.

Hades I, Zagreus/Megaera, Duty and Love

"You know," Zagreus said, "why don't we shake things up a bit and instead of fighting, you give me a kiss for good luck and send me on my way?"

Meg's whip caught him squarely in the chest and sent him flying backward toward the entrance to the chamber.

"Thanks, love," Zagreus said, springing back with Stygius in hand, and the two day to doing their duty.

The palace guards found her quickly, although in their defense a sudden, huge explosion that caused a small earthquake and left a crater behind was hard to miss.

"Halt!"

They circled Sakura, pointing at her with their swords, and barked, "Drop your weapons!"

Sakura opened her right hand and the kunai clattered on the paved road.

"All of your weapons!"

She exhaled with an eye roll hidden by the darkness, but proceeded to throw away the rest of her kunai, shuriken, senbon, seal tags, ninja wire, a tanto, poisoned darts, and even a giant spiked mace; then, when she was finished, she raised her hands in a pacifying gesture, standing in a circle of scattered steel. The guards eyed her warily and took her aside to cuff her.

"Hey, you forgot one," Sakura pointed at the heap of weapons; when the guard nearest to her turned aside unconsciously for a second to look she broke her restraints, left him unconscious with an uppercut, and the rest soon followed.

"Well, I guess I'm adding a few swords to my collection," she dismissed the summoned weapons. It always was a great distraction.

"Thank you, but I actually quite prefer to do it myself," Liliandil says with a bright smile, working her hair into it's braided coils.

There is a hesitation in the handmaiden's movements, an uncertainty that tells Lily she has taken her job from her.

"Perhaps you could start reading my correspondence to me while I finish?"

Nano slapped Three's hand away from their keyboard, where it had been tapping a funeral dirge on the backspace button.

"What are you doing?" Nano screamed, clawing at their hair.

"Dude, chill, I wrote like... four hundred words, and if I try to cram in one more semicolon then English is going to kill me."

The alarmingly loud shriek of "Platinum Match!" halted him in his tracks. Turning, Sephiroth raised an eyebrow at the brightly-coloured and highly irate young man stomping towards him, mismatched troopers in tow; beside him, Zack whistled softly.

"What's that all about?" he asked, a hint of glee in his voice and Sephiroth sighed heavily.

"Unfortunately, I think we are about to find out."

With all possible credit and delight given to Destiny Doodles, whose Platinum Match comic I can't find right now for fear of crashing my laptop (again) but who basically inspired this whole cloth. XD

"It's my fate," Yue says as she reaches for the dying fish in the firebender's hands, pulling away from Sokka, and condemning her flesh to save the world.

"It's your fate," Yue says as she sends a wave to wash Aang to safety and onward to his mission to save the world.

Fate; it's a heavy word for a heavy burden. Centuries fly by and even if she is a goddess, she still kneels to fate time and again.

But one day, she feels something change in the world, just a small shift, but when she looks, she feels the return of a soul she has not felt in ages. She sees Sokka again, but he is not Sokka--he is new, he is reborn.

He is dying. It is his fate.

Yue looks at the baby who is not her Sokka, but then maybe one day he will be someone Sokka, and her decision is already made.

In the moonlight, she puts a hand on the forehead of the tiny babe and whispers "this is not your fate" before vanishing. In the morning, his parents will find him well and squalling, his hair snow white.

She has never known how to say goodbye to Edmund, in the end. They never had truly had need to, not really - a few moments between the edge of time and Lucy's cordial where it had come quite close, a letter from the front, a letter from a different front in a different world, but it had never been truly goodbye and it was never supposed to be.

What a waste, she thought, at a sensible and calm remove from the graves of her family and the stones they would be buried next to, what a damnable fucking waste.

But she didn't cry. Not yet.
