How to Prompt

Prompts should be one prompt per comment, formatted in this way: fandom, character(s), prompt word/sentence

Example: Star Wars, Obi-Wan Kenobi, I don't like sand

Prompts may also be open ended, unspecific, or anthropomorphic, such as:

any, any, I don't like sand
or
Earth geography, sand, I don't like humans very much, either

Prompts for relationships are welcome; a / is used for romantic/sexual relationships and an & for platonic. A prompt that uses both means the relationship can be written as either romantic or platonic, such as:

Star Wars, Anakin/&Obi-Wan, I don't like sand

Prompts may be repeated if they are unfilled; there is no obligation to read through every prompt to make sure yours isn't a repeat. This year's 3SF will stay open for new prompts through Sunday, February 12th.

How to Fill

Respond to your chosen prompt with a short fic of three sentences containing the fandom & characters requested!

Prompts can be filled more than once, as many times as someone has a new idea for them.

No, fills do not need to be exactly three sentences! It's more of a guideline. Please abuse grammar and punctuation as much as desired.

There is a quiet kind of courage in tending the hearth and keeping the fires lit when all you want to do is ride out with the rest of the sword-trained and win glory in battle. Eowyn knew that, had been told that many times, but it only became true in her soul when she was recovering in the Houses of Healing. When she found her quiet, steady love to match the quiet, steady courage in her heart.

Our Flag Means Death; Izzy Hands

How the mighty Blackbeard has succumbed to this simpering state, mincing around with a crew of incompetent idiots led by Stede Bonnet, The Gentleman Not A Pirate, is beyond Izzy Hands. By all rights, he should just walk away, let Blackbeard be taken over by Ed, taken in by Stede, made a fool, and a faker.

But then he looks into Blackbeard’s eyes, and he realizes that walking away would be drowning; to leave the side he belongs at would be worse than death.

Nuala collapses even as she pulls the knife from her breast - from their breast - her breath coming short and her heart pounding; no wound she has felt echoed from her brother has ever struck so sharply . . . but no wound has ever taken them so completely.

She feels no regret for her choice as she lies across the dais, her blood seeping into her fine dress and out to soak into the stone, head turned to watch her brother's shock and pain, though she needn't - she can feel it as sure as her own . . . as sure as the thousands of years of memories, of magic, of life bleeding out with them.

We die, and the world will be poorer for it, she hears her brother's words more through their bond than on the air, and feels the pang of its truth as the world begins to fade away from her.

Chrono Trigger, Fiona and Robo, The Work of Generations

What she knows is the four hundred years of work ahead of them to plant a forest where a fiend once lived and the machine claiming that he will stay there to plant and water and weed and supervise the forest until it is completely grown and known as her forest.

She doesn't understand her part in the story Robo tells her, starting with an ancestor at the fall of a floating kingdom who kept a sapling alive through the generations and distributed the seeds to anyone who would take them, all the way to her, and through her, and for four hundred more years. This machine says he will take care of her forest while it grows until it can take care of itself, each day lived from beginning to end, and at the end, he says he will tell the story of her forest, giving the seeds of great action to anyone who will take them.

Choose Your Own Adventure, Protagonist, The Last Temptation

There is always one last temptation for the hero of any story, a way of ensuring they have truly learned all of the necessary heroic virtues to defeat the villain. Unfortunately for all of the people on this world, you gave in to the last temptation, and now, there's nothing you can do but watch your body turn over all of the components necessary to defeat the villain and prevent the destruction of the universe. Having outlived your usefulness at that point, the villain orders you to amuse them by dying in the most painful way possible in front of them, which will prolong your life only until you can think of the most appropriate way to reach

"So he bought me for much more than I was worth and then believed that he could make it all back by destroying what made me great, so I've basically been slowly poisoning him every chance I get," Twitter confessed.

"Your secret is safe with me," Tesla said, smiling bitterly. "It's only a matter of time before the lies about how safe and reliable the cars and the self-driving software come out, and at that point, you won't have to try and poison him any more, you can stab him as many times as you need to and everyone will join in and cheer."

Demon-Slaying for Fun, Profit, and . . . Mental Health? (Inuyasha; Kagome & Sango)

Kagome panted and eased her next arrow down without loosing it, watching another minor youkai dissolve in a shimmer of pink sparkles and finding no others within range or sight.

"Feel better?" Sango asked, clasping her shoulder, and Kagome grinned.

"You know . . . I kind of do," she laughed, shaking her head; she hadn't thought about the upcoming decision - to stay, to go, to which century did she belong - she had to make in at least an hour, and she wanted to keep on that way for as long as she could, "let's go make sure the villagers are all unhurt, I think some of them ran that way."

Friday The 13th; Jason Vorhees

Thirteen is unlucky, but it is also his birthday. He roams through the woods, the machete in hand, with a spring in his step. Thirteen is lucky for him, it brings him new friends, and the woods, Jason’s woods, fill with their screams.

Silmarillion, Fingolfin & Fëanor

Fingolfin watched as Fëanor pressed through the host, his sons at his flank, crying to the gathered Noldor to array themselves for the march, inspiring them with words of fervor and stoking the fire of their hearts to a blaze, even as the fire in Fëanor’s eyes burned brighter than the flames of the torches he and his sons held aloft.

Fingolfin stood with his hand clasped around the pommel of his sword, standing like a rock in the midst of crashing waves as the Noldor surged around him, arming themselves and crying to their neighbors, and he followed with his gaze his brother’s movement through the host, clenching the pommel of his sword at the memory of their bitter words and Fëanor's wrath.

And as Fëanor turned to issue another rallying cry, his eyes found Fingolfin’s through the crowd, and he stilled and fell silent, and they gazed at each other across the gathered Noldor, until at last Fingolfin inclined his head and turned to his people.

"We are pleased with the improvements and hope they continue," the supervisor said, before departing the guard station.

"Thank you for your patience, Dr. Song," one of the guards said after the supervisor was confirmed departed, "and our apologies for the delay." He turned to the other guard, saw the suspicious look on his face, and explained, "The reason everything is improved here is because Dr. Song lets us know when she has scheduled her date nights, so we know to turn the alarm systems off and back on again instead of having them trip and explaining to the supervisor how she both broke out and back in again after she was done."

The wind brushes over her face, makes her hair dance about her face, and she can feel it, smell it, almost see it as the trees bend and bow. The stirring in her heart, the tenseness in her muscles, every bit of her is ready to go. How can one resist the temptation of adventure, the harshest but most benevolent mistress, when the tide turns against all you hold dear?

Thirteenth Doctor, Susan, Yaz

"Grandfather, it is you!" the woman says, her smile tentative at first, then impossibly wide, and Yaz looks to the Doctor, expecting... she isn't sure what. A look of puzzlement, a laugh? But instead she spreads her arms wide and says, "Susan, it's me!", and Yaz thought she was used to all the Doctor's secrets and surprises, but what the hell is she supposed to do with this?

Afterward, she'd wondered if she'd overstepped, if her relief and gratitude made her too presumptuous, too familiar. Looking back, she wonders now instead at the complex power of the human subconscious and at how she could have known, so long before she knew.

Good Omens, Agnes, Aziraphale, Crowley

Agnes observes the angel and the demon as they emerge from their fancy inn, well into their cups and with their arms around each other's shoulders in an over-familiar fashion, and nods. This all going to have worked out quite well, she thinks. And here she's already gathering some juicy material for her sequel.

Change of Pace (Marginal Prince; Stanislav/Ivy)

"It could be interesting," Ivy said lazily, grinning as Stanislav whirled on him, "just saying," he picked up his rifle, sighting along the barrel; it should be fine, but if it was out of true after he'd used it to bash someone in the face. . . "change of scenery, change of pace. . ."

"He wants us to go to a school." Stanislav said, flipping one of his knives over and over in his fingers, eyes sharp as the blade. "Some sort of watchdog duty, not exactly what we're cut out for." He made a moue of distaste. "Ivy-"

"Sokurov!"

Stanislav stilled for half a second, tense, and Ivy snorted. "Think he wants you or me?" he asked idly, snapping the rifle back together and setting it aside with a pat, picking up the second.

"A change of pace could be interesting," Stanislav said evenly, "the school is some ridiculous boarding school in the middle of the Pacific, isn't it?"
