2023 Three Sentence Ficathon - Post #1

Welcome to the 2023 Three Sentence Ficathon!
As of 16 Jan 2023 this post is NOW CLOSED TO NEW PROMPTS! PLEASE POST YOUR NEW PROMPTS HERE, IN POST 2! Do continue to fill prompts here but please put all new prompts in Post 2.

This post will remain open for new prompts until we hit 4000 comments, at which point we'll open a new one to avoid captcha as long as possible. New fills and comments on fills will always be welcome.

How to Prompt

Prompts should be one prompt per comment, formatted in this way: fandom, character(s), prompt word/sentence

Example: Star Wars, Obi-Wan Kenobi, I don't like sand

Prompts may also be open ended, unspecific, or anthropomorphic, such as:

any, any, I don't like sand
or
Earth geography, sand, I don't like humans very much, either

Prompts for relationships are welcome; a / is used for romantic/sexual relationships and an & for platonic. A prompt that uses both means the relationship can be written as either romantic or platonic, such as:

Star Wars, Anakin/&Obi-Wan, I don't like sand

Prompts may be repeated if they are unfilled; there is no obligation to read through every prompt to make sure yours isn't a repeat. This year's 3SF will stay open for new prompts through Sunday, February 12th.

How to Fill

Respond to your chosen prompt with a short fic of three sentences containing the fandom & characters requested!

Prompts can be filled more than once, as many times as someone has a new idea for them.

Notes & Rules

No, fills do not need to be exactly three sentences! It's more of a guideline. Please abuse grammar and punctuation as much as desired.

3SF is a Choose Not to Warn space. Spoiler and content warnings are not required, though writers are free to add them if they please. If you see something you don't like, just scroll until you do!

A Dreamwidth account is not needed to participate. Anonymous prompts/fills are welcome, or you can use Open ID.

Cross-posting is encouraged; there is a 3SF Collection on AO3 if you'd like to post fills there as well.

Note that the comm is searchable! Tick the 'include comments' button when searching to easily find prompts for your chosen fandom/characters.

And most importantly, have fun! If you have questions, check the Sticky Info post and if they're not answered there, head to the Contact the Mods post.

in the chillest land, and on the strangest sea

Irrylath barely remembers his father the king; instead, his models of power are his two mothers: the one who bore him and the one who stole him.

Oriencor's example is a litany of things to shun -- do not be capricious, do not assume all places and people exist for your pleasure and convenience, do not lay the land to waste -- but he spent his year in Isternes planning war and clinging to the barest thread of hope that he might not drown in the black pit he dug for himself to please his mother, his lover, his goddess who locked his heart in lead and promised to drink his soul to take his pain away; he did not study how Syllva ruled, and she will not leave her city to guide him and Sabr as they take their first steps into the fragile dream of Avaric reborn.

"Stay and tell me how our mother would govern?" he asks his brothers as the warhost finish the feasting and funerals beside the mere, and begin the slow return to their several lands; and though he dares not depend on ties of blood, and made no effort to befriend this unlooked-for late-come family, perhaps there is more to life than despair and grim resignation, for the answer to his plea is, simply, yes.

Oh, thank you for filling this! It's sad and wonderful, and there's so much I love here -- Irrylath trying to be better, the years in Isternes from his perspective, the centrality of the women (and ouch at "the one who bore him and the one who stole him"), the way he automatcially assumes that his brothers will say no, the sadness of the fact that he knows Oriencor's example so well but almost nothing of Syllva's, even though she's the model he wants to follow (and yay for the brothers and the hopefulness of the end!).

And I loved that description of Oriencor, and I'm so impressed this all fit in three sentences. :D

Thank YOU for the prompt! :)

Irrylath's life is a compounding cascade of tragedies, and even after Aeriel yanks him back from the brink he can't start to heal as long as Oriencor is still out there (and also as long as he hasn't admitted exactly how deep her abuse ran)... and then the moment she's dead, the world is saved, and he can FINALLY stop and breathe, oops, no, no time for rest and healing, gotta go rule Avaric and repay the debt he owes the Avarclon instead.

I like to think that building something is at least somewhat therapeutic, and also that even though he needs to present a strong regal image to the world, in private he may finally be able to lean on his family for support.

Ah, yes, that's a good description of Irrylath! <3 The whole thing with Aeriel at the end does not help, either, with how much it turns Avaric into a cage, again (when I think it didn't necessarily have to be, it could have given him a purpose after and a chance to get closure, rebuilding Avaric after destroying it) and how he very much views her as trapped by an Ancient witch, just like he was. :|

I hope so! And the connection with his family, as well -- and also, perhaps, reaching out to them for ruling advice (or having them reach out to him to offer it) is a kind of emotional vulnerability he can handle, as opposed to reaching out for personal connection?
