Barnaby bent over, coughing, and shook his head when Nathan offered to get him a drink from the corner store. "I'm fine," he wheezed.
Nathan eyed the puddle of yellow sunflower petals piled on the sidewalk, where Barnaby had spat them out like a cat with a hairball. "Are you sure? How long has that been going on?"
Barnaby waved off Nathan's concern. "A few years. It gets worse in the spring with the pollen." He straightened and started walking again. "I'll be fine in a few weeks."
"You do know how to fix it, don't you?" Nathan asked.
Barnaby gave him a flat look over his shoulder. "I will be fine. In a few weeks," he said, in a tone that said the matter was closed.
Nathan debated whether to mention that Tiger had been suffering from the same ailment for the same amount of time, as evidenced by the wet rose petals he was constantly stuffing into the trash at the training center whenever Barnaby couldn't see.
Then again, if those two would prefer to choke on flower petals for half the year as opposed to admitting that they might be in love with each other, well, far be it from Nathan to stop them.
