bare: a pop opera, Jason & Lucas

Two days before break, and Jason still hasn't managed to slip away and get set for the summer; Peter's been clingy, and Peter maybe still doesn't know that he pays for a stash before summer to supplement whatever Jason can steal from his mom's medicine cabinet, or that he seems to blow through it faster and faster every year. He's getting antsy, and it's starting to look like he's going to have to choose between letting Peter worry and going home without it when Ivy accidentally comes to the rescue, distracting Peter in the hall after lunch at just the right place so Jason can lean next to Lucas' locker and make it look like he's just waiting.

Lucas nudges his arm, glancing back over his shoulder to make sure nobody's paying any attention, and then slips something into the side of Jason's bag before he can say a word.

"I didn't bring anything down," he starts in a low voice, and Lucas shakes his head.

"I know you're good for it, you can pay me back in September. If you make it that long," he adds, and his smile's sympathetic. Their dads are cut from the same cloth, lawyers waiting for their sons to make good on the investment of having kids; if anyone understands the need to brace for the summer, it's Lucas, and Jason relaxes a little, finally ready for the long weeks ahead.

"Thanks to you, I just might."
