Welcome to the 2023 Three Sentence Ficathon!
As of 16 Jan 2023 this post is NOW CLOSED TO NEW PROMPTS! PLEASE POST YOUR NEW PROMPTS HERE, IN POST 2! Do continue to fill prompts here but please put all new prompts in Post 2.

This post will remain open for new prompts until we hit 4000 comments, at which point we'll open a new one to avoid captcha as long as possible. New fills and comments on fills will always be welcome.

How to Prompt

Prompts should be one prompt per comment, formatted in this way: fandom, character(s), prompt word/sentence

Example: Star Wars, Obi-Wan Kenobi, I don't like sand

Prompts may also be open ended, unspecific, or anthropomorphic, such as:

any, any, I don't like sand
or
Earth geography, sand, I don't like humans very much, either

Prompts for relationships are welcome; a / is used for romantic/sexual relationships and an & for platonic. A prompt that uses both means the relationship can be written as either romantic or platonic, such as:

Star Wars, Anakin/&Obi-Wan, I don't like sand

Prompts may be repeated if they are unfilled; there is no obligation to read through every prompt to make sure yours isn't a repeat. This year's 3SF will stay open for new prompts through Sunday, February 12th.

How to Fill

Respond to your chosen prompt with a short fic of three sentences containing the fandom & characters requested!

Prompts can be filled more than once, as many times as someone has a new idea for them.

Notes & Rules

No, fills do not need to be exactly three sentences! It's more of a guideline. Please abuse grammar and punctuation as much as desired.

3SF is a Choose Not to Warn space. Spoiler and content warnings are not required, though writers are free to add them if they please. If you see something you don't like, just scroll until you do!

A Dreamwidth account is not needed to participate. Anonymous prompts/fills are welcome, or you can use Open ID.

Cross-posting is encouraged; there is a 3SF Collection on AO3 if you'd like to post fills there as well.

Note that the comm is searchable! Tick the 'include comments' button when searching to easily find prompts for your chosen fandom/characters.

And most importantly, have fun! If you have questions, check the Sticky Info post and if they're not answered there, head to the Contact the Mods post.

any, any, old gods

Narnia is the domain of Aslan, it's true, but he is not the only otherworldly figure that walks the land; there is Bacchus and his bride that come every year for the bacchanal, there is the river gods in every stream, and even Father Christmas every winter.

But there still older gods yet--Edmund meets a one eyed old man playing chess with a man with the head of an ibis and has to politely turn down their offer of letting him join them. Peter meets an unnerving old woman in a hut that walks on chicken legs in the north, but she was too busy bludgeoning a giant stupid enough to run afoul of her to notice the king, and frankly Peter was glad for it. Susan meets a strange woman on the side of the road, washing bloodied clothes in a stream, who looks at her and grins, saying "oh, don't worry, your majesty. These aren't the clothes of anyone you know."

Lucy encounters a strange creature as well--in the woods, late one night, she finds herself before a man so tall she almost mistook him for a giant at first. He has the hindquarters of a horse, but something tells her that he is not a real centaur any more than he is a normal man, and on his brow is a pair of massive antlers that almost look like a pair of branches. She gets the feeling that he is on the hunt and that she is in extreme danger, but then he nods to her and turns to go--whatever quarry he seeks, tonight it's not her. She watches him vanish into the trees before she can safely breathe again.

YESSSSSSS fuck yeah, wild gods everywhere. Narnia was always missing Baba Yaga.

ooohhh this is fantastic, so magical and sort of ominous, and you get a real sense that these gods are not to be messed which (as of course gods shouldn't be), so cool!! I don't think I recognize all of the gods, which ones are they?

Edmund runs into Odin and Thoth, Peter saw Baba Yaga from Russian folktales, Susan met the Morrigan from Irish folklore, and Lucy meets the Horned God who shows up in lots of mythologies under various names but is also an important figure in Wicca nowadays.

Ooooh, yes! I do love a good feral!Narnia. A god who can scare even Lucy is a horrifying thing indeed.

Love Baba Yaga beating the snot out of a dumb giant, lol.

The Horned God in this was a big reference to his appearance (well, not visually, but how frightening he appears to the other characters) in The Ancient Magus's Bride.

The big question I have for both in that image and in this fill is what is it he's hunting?

The Silt Verses, Old Gods in Old Dirt

In the cities they speak of their "civilized" gods:
Bet on the sure thing, kid, and throw in your lot with the Wire-bitten Child! Have you not yet paid your pittance to the Petrol Pater this season? Remember that regular sacrifice is needed to keep your auto running! Glut yourself at the Chitterling's trough and remember to take your leftovers home!

Carpenter spits on the ground, scuffing her shoe so it mixes with the rest of the silt at the river's edge. Focus group-tested, toothless gods, who need their sacrifices brutalized beyond recognition as human to actually tear and find the bleeding heart beneath. Their worshippers wouldn't last five minutes out here, where her river winds through thick black mud and the rustling leaves sing of beasts and prey. She knows that even her god is new here, compared to the things in the sleep in the dirt, their names forgotten by all but their hidden worshippers. Her people can still tell the story of when the Trawler Man first came to the Chosen Bride and liberated her from her unkind marriage; how can a god be called old when his genesis is still known?

She picks up a few more of the Trawler Man's scuttling angels and dumps them in her crabbing bucket. They'll be useful when she next sends a sacrifice down to the Trawler Man's garden, and if she doesn't have a new sacrifice in the next few days, then they'll be useful as a snack.

She doesn't dally much longer, though- here is where her river wends through old woods, where old gods sleep, and Carpenter does not care to meet such things.

Thank you! Silt Verses is still (relatively) small for a horror podcast fandom, but it's a great series with a lot of really good world building.

I checked out the first episode and wow. That's good horror. I love the idea of it coming from a morally dubious (to put it mildly) POV. And the writing, acting and editing are good. I'll be listening to more!

"Do you have any idea how dangerous what you're playing with is, Stiles?" Deaton demanded, and Stiles breathed, mostly tuning him out.

"I do, actually," Stiles said, and flipped the knife into his hand without looking; he paused for a moment, but he'd already mentally marked out where to cut that would leave him free to use his hands and not be likely to keep bleeding, "though few of you seem to believe it, I almost always know pretty well how dangerous what I'm doing is."

Deaton kept talking, growing a little louder now, but Stiles ignored him, slashing into the meat of his forearm and allowing the blood to fall; the candles around him all became tall pillars of unwavering flame, and Stiles opened his eyes and threw out his power and his will, seeing the magic shimmer in the air as he dug deep, calling for gods so old their names had been forgotten.

Beast Wars, post-canon, unnamed characters

Ages and ages hence, their descendents would still be telling the stories, though so fragmented by time and geography that they bore only the most superficial resemblance to one another or to the events that birthed them: of beings that blurred the line between animal and human, of two warring factions of gods - one hostile to mortals, one benevolent, both dangerous - tales of heroism, and love, and of a heartwrenching sacrifice.

But that is unimaginable eons ahead. Tonight, there is only the ancestor of humanity, reciting to his wide-eyed children how his life was saved by a god who'd laid down His life for theirs, so that their people would always remember.
